A Catalan human tower in Geneva (2014)

Keen to demonstrate the unique culture of the Catalan region and to underline the strength of the movement for independence, a day of action was organized in a number of European cities in June 2014. In Geneva buses disgorged groups of Catalans into the big square in front of the Palais des Nations. The crowd then coalesced into a solid mass of bodies onto which several of the men clambered, gradually forming the tiers of a human tower. As shown in the following sequence, the Catalans in Geneva managed to reach the fourth level. The record for such “castellers” as they are called is eight tiers!

The action took place close to this somewhat bizarre sculpture of a broken chair. I suppose the idea is that the United Nations is in the business of repair…
